Choosing the Right Summer Family Photo Outfits
What to Wear for Summer Family Photos
If summer had a color palette, it would be light, airy and natural. Think soft neutrals, warm creams, sage greens, dusty blues and muted florals.
Instead of bright neon tones, choose softer shades that complement Utah’s natural landscapes. Light fabrics like linen, cotton and flowy dresses photograph beautifully in the summer breeze. Avoid heavy materials or dark colors that absorb heat and distract from the scenery.

Coordinating the Whole Family
The key to great summer family photo outfits is coordination, not matching.
Start with one patterned or textured piece, such as a floral dress or subtle plaid shirt, and build around it with complementary tones. Keeping the color palette to 3–4 cohesive shades helps your family look polished while still feeling natural.
Barefoot beach sessions, neutral sandals or simple sneakers work well depending on the location. Layers like lightweight cardigans or denim jackets can add depth without overheating.

Best Utah Locations for Summer Family Photos
Utah Lake
Albion Basin
Albion Basin is known for its stunning wildflowers and mountain views during peak summer months. Muted pastels, soft whites and subtle floral patterns photograph beautifully against the natural color in the canyon.
Because wildflowers are delicate, sessions here are often limited and carefully scheduled. This is a family photoshoot MUST if you haven’t taken pictures here before! We’re not joking, it’s so worth it. There’s a $12 entrance fee you’ll pay at the checkpoint before driving up a dirt road (this part is kind of bumpy, so we recommend a higher clearance vehicle just for your own peace of mind). You’ll park in one of three parking lots, depending on traffic at the location, and then meander through the paths lined with dainty flowers.
Daybreak’s Sandy Beach
If you want a stunning summer view without having to drive up the canyons, Daybreak Lake is the photoshoot location for you!
This location is best in the early morning or right before sunset. When you catch this spot on a cloudy day, it creates the most stunning light, and you can sometimes see the clouds’ reflection in the water. The dock and surrounding areas are also gorgeous to take some snapshots at! We love Daybreak. That’s why we’ve had our studio location in SodaRow for years!
This location works especially well with light neutrals, soft blues and breezy dresses that move naturally in the wind. Early morning and sunset sessions provide the most flattering light.

Coordinating is always better than matching. Choose a cohesive color palette of three to four complementary tones rather than putting everyone in the same color. Mixing textures and subtle patterns adds depth while keeping the overall look polished.
-
For children, simple and comfortable outfits work best. Lightweight dresses, neutral shorts, soft button-down shirts or textured rompers photograph beautifully. Avoid clothing with large logos or busy graphics that may distract from the overall image.

Choose lighter fabrics and avoid heavy layers. Bringing water, small towels and comfortable shoes for walking between shots can help everyone stay relaxed. Evening golden hour sessions are often cooler and provide softer light.
